Patch Application & Material Guide

Personalized patches for hats, bags, aprons & more

Choose a patch for your project, not just your hat. Order laser-engraved patches ready for your own heat press, or ask USD47 to apply them to a compatible item. Patch-only prices do not include a hat, bag, apron or application.

Standard or Premium?

Standard leatherette: an economical choice for everyday branding on a smooth, compatible fabric. Start with uncoated cotton, cotton canvas or twill that tolerates the patch's pressing requirements.

Premium adhesive leatherette: our preferred starting point for frequently handled bags, aprons and outerwear when the fabric can tolerate its longer pressing cycle. The upgraded heat-activated backing is intended for a durable bond. It does not make every fabric compatible, waterproof or suitable for industrial laundering.

Creekside: a color/finish collection, not a separate application method. The Creekside patches offered here use Premium adhesive. Choose the shape and color, then check the exact SKU before pressing.

Match the patch to the surface

Patch familyGood starting pointsImportant limits
Standard leatheretteCompatible hat fronts; smooth, uncoated cotton/canvas bags and aprons; firm woven fabric with a flat pressing area.Sample-test the fabric and adhesive. Do not assume a short press cycle makes a delicate or coated fabric safe.
Premium adhesive leatherette & CreeksideFrequently handled bags, aprons, hats and jackets with a heat-tolerant, evenly supported application area.Needs its own press settings and adequate heat/pressure. Polyester and blends require a heat, dye-migration and adhesion test. Premium is not a universal adhesive.
Genuine leatherA natural leather look on compatible hats, sturdy canvas bags and aprons, after sample approval.Natural shade and grain vary. Keep care gentle; avoid soaking. Use leather-specific pressing instructions. A leather patch does not mean it can be heat-applied to a leather garment.
PVCPre-designed raised patches on compatible headwear; other items reviewed individually.Supplied as shown, without engraving/personalization. Heat can distort PVC. Hat-press instructions do not automatically validate a flat bag or apron application. Not included in the standard engraved-patch package.
Adhesive-backed patch sheetsCustom-cut patch shapes using the selected sheet's Standard, Premium or genuine-leather backing.A full sheet is raw material. Cutting, engraving and application are separate unless specifically included. Follow the backing's instructions.
Sheets without adhesiveCustom shapes for an agreed sewing or compatible adhesive process. Not ready to heat-press. Do not assume a leatherette sheet has adhesive. Backing/application method must be selected first.

These are project-selection recommendations, not a guarantee for every garment. Fiber content alone is not enough: coatings, finishes, texture, seams, padding and the press all matter.

Send for review before ordering

Nylon, waterproof or water-repellent finishes, waxed canvas, silicone-coated fabrics, stretch fabrics, mesh, fleece, ribbed knits, delicate silk/wool and heat-sensitive synthetics need individual review. Do not press across zippers, thick seams or pockets that prevent even pressure. Do not apply over existing HTV/prints unless that combination is approved. Hard surfaces such as glass, metal and plastic are outside these fabric heat-press packages.

Pressing them yourself

Send your patch SKU, fabric composition, item care label, intended placement and press type before ordering. We can engrave your design and supply the patches loose. Use a proper heat press and the instructions for that exact patch/backing and press; a household iron is not our recommended application method.

Standard and Premium patches use different heat/time cycles. PVC, genuine leather and non-adhesive sheets need different handling again. Request your SKU-specific instructions rather than copying a setting from another patch. Test one sample, allow it to cool and check the bond and appearance before producing the batch. Follow the stricter care requirements of the garment and patch; ask before machine washing, tumble drying, dry cleaning or commercial laundering.

Canvas totes: choose your finish

Our listed cotton canvas totes can be ordered with one standard HTV design OR one Standard engraved leatherette patch at the displayed finished-tote price. A patch-only tote has no HTV design. Includes one existing patch shape up to 3 x 2 inches, one simple engraved design and application in one approved flat location. Blank-bag photos show the tote size/color, not the finished artwork. Placement and a sample bond check are required before production.

Upgrade to Premium adhesive: add $1 per applied patch. The upgrade covers the longer application process and handling. No upgrade fee is added to a package already expressly quoted with Premium included. Loose Premium patches retain their listed SKU prices; this applied-package upgrade is not an extra loose-patch fee.

Same design, patch size/color and placement per quantity tier. Add artwork services only when needed. Custom shapes, larger patches, genuine leather, PVC, unusual placements and customer-supplied bags/aprons are quoted separately. Do not add this full extra-patch charge when simply choosing the one Standard patch already included in the patch-only tote.
